I know I am about 6 months late on this one. Can we all just look at this roof rack and agree that they could have done a better job?

This exactly.  Its just a straight copy and, frankly, the TRD pro 4runner is just Toyota saying “look, 4 door wranglers are the hot stuff these days so while we know you miss the FJC...this is pretty much just the 4 door FJC that would be selling anyway.”

To top it off the rack is basically useless. I like heavy duty rails so you can mount load bars of your choice and then add a box, ski rack etc as you wish.

I want a full expo rack. I was thinking about making a little adapter to make my adhock rack a little more usable. Stupid tar iff prices put a temporary halt to that plan for now.

If I were seriously tripping like heading off to South America I would be finding a fabricator who does racks.. The off the shelf offering from Prinsu/Baja/FrontRunner are very nice but if you really need something strong and specific I would be finding someone to build one.
